The work explores the development of computer technology, through the creative use of Kirlian imaging; a photographic technique that is used to capture coronal discharges. High voltage electricity applied to a variety of computer components (including a wire wound resistor, broken valve, dekatron and micro chip) produced visible electric energy fields that were photographically captured and animated. By stripping the notion of the 'computer' down to single components, the work attempts to peel back its layers and reveal its internal workings and life force. At the Arigina mine, swathes of red oxide runs down the rock face and abandoned mine carts have rusted from exposure to the elements. Experimenting with recipes for producing rust using various forms of iron and oxidizing agents, the canvas is built up in layers; colours emerging over a period of time as chemical changes take place. Rust has an imbued sense of time - the very nature by which it forms. Piles of old nuclear reactor parts and decaying fuel rods, much of them of unknown provenance and age, line the murky, radioactive waters of the cooling pond in the centre of D30. Developed in collaboration with physicists in Space Science from Aberystwyth University, hypnotic visuals inspired by celestial occurrences, were projected around the space, much like a planetarium. A large domed mirror in the centre of the room creates an illusionary viewing experience within it's optical depth. Collected samples, including plant life, insects, pollen and minerals, were magnified and projected onto the geometric facade of the Festival building. The work portrays material surfaces as alien landscapes for exploration, in which the viewer is transported on a journey through the very fabric of our world.
